What is forensic psychology?

- The application of psychological theory, research, and methods to legal matters

- In criminal matters, common types of evaluation include (but are not limited to) competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, and violence risk assessment

- In civil (non-criminal) cases, forensic psychologists often offer expertise in the areas of civil psychiatric commitment, personal injury, child custody, discrimination and harassment, and substituted judgment

- In addition to directly evaluating parties to a case, psychologists may provide direct consultation to attorneys regarding mental health issues that arise in the context of litigation

Dr. Wisch specializes in the forensic evaluation of criminal defendants, including the assessment of adjudicative competence, criminal responsibility, and violence risk. He has evaluated hundreds of criminal defendants with respect to these issues, and has testified numerous times in these cases. He also evaluates litigants in the context of some civil proceedings. He is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in Forensic Psychology.
